Within walking distance from the centre, the Scuderie of Villa Favard have been fully renovated by the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, who bought the Villa Favard complex in 2007 to create an international centre of education in Florence, and consist of seventeen classrooms and two laboratories capable of accommodating seven hundred students, plus offices and service areas equipped with innovative solutions and high tech instrumentation.

The restoration works were aimed at painstakingly recovering the original structure, built by the architect Giuseppe Poggi in the middle of the ‘800, in respect of the existing historical elements, as well as incorporating several significant improvements for optimising and streamlining the areas.

A third floor has been obtained under the roof by exploiting the high ceilings, and all the classrooms have been fitted out with the latest technological equipment to meet all modern educational requirements, with video projection instruments, automated blinds, photosensitive lighting, air-conditions and Wi-Fi connections throughout the entire building. Inside you can notice the unmistakable “Polimoda style” in the choice of furnishings and materials where the clean lines and minimalist colours are designed to allow maximum physical and psychological space for the development of creativity and individual expression.

The opening of prestigious Villa Favard which will house the offices, conference rooms and new Documentation Centre  is fixed for October 2011, on occasion of the new academic year.

How to find Polimoda Design Lab

The new premises of the creative laboratories of Polimoda are located at the new integrated Higher Education Department of Fashion and Design, in Via Galileo Galilei in Scandicci: a entirely new structure located a stone’s throw away from the new town centre, not far from the tram stops Resistenza and De Andrè, and is directly connected with the centre of Florence and the other branches in Villa Favard and Villa Strozzi. A strategic position, in the heart of the district famous for leather goods and fashion production.

Over 3,100 m2 that will host 13 laboratories for design, sewing, textiles, pattern-making, footwear and leather goods, especially created for the courses in the Design & Technology field – from Fashion Design, to Footwear and Accessories Design, to Fashion Technology – in addition to public areas and offices. Moreover, a further 400 m2 will also be used to set up a business incubator, a new project currently being developed to support young, talented designers.

The Design Lab hosts many classrooms where patternmaking, fashion design and sewing classes are held and it is truly the “creative” facility of Polimoda, always bustling with activity and full of fabrics, colors, mannequins and professional machinery: a real design lab! All the labs are equipped with industrial machinery used to realize didactic projects within an environment that faithfully reflects the reality of fashion companies. The equipment is comprised of more than 200 pieces of highly specialized machinery: sewing machines, professional instruments used to refine prototypes, ironing boards, flat knitting machines and looper machines: all these instruments make Polimoda Design Lab the Italian biggest didactic lab for manufacturing. Students also have at their complete disposal all the materials and professional tools they need: muslin, paper pattern, french curves and compasses for pattern-making, buttonholes and zippers of all kinds, professional scissors, trimmings and buttons in different shapes and materials.

The Design lab also hosts a well furnished Shop (all-day opening 9:00 am – 7.45 pm) where students can purchase all they need for lab activities such as basic sewing items or more technical products usually hard to find, provided by the best distributors in the field. Moreover, the “Manufacturing Office” is the place where students can rely on the professional experience of qualified experts in order to refine prototypes and their final collections.

This facility is open 12 hours a day, and in between classes students can use all the equipments to realize their projects or relax a bit in the chill out, wi-fi area. The Design Lab staff is specifically trained for maintenance and is always
