The Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) hosts a range of educational initiatives, most notably, the Interaction Design Programme and the CIID Summer School. Additionally, CIID encompasses of a consultancy, research group and an incubator.
The educational activities present an integrated environment for participants, faculty and staff to work together in a multicultural, multidisciplinary studio environment. The school attracts an impressive and diverse selection of International visiting faculty who are highly regarded as experts in their fields.
CIID continually develops their definition of interaction design through the evolving nature of the curricula. Led by a ‘learning by doing’ philosophy and a people-centred approach, students are encouraged to explore topics before generating ideas. These concepts are then prototyped in the well-equipped lab and workshop.
CIID EDUCATION WAS LISTED AS ONE OF ‘THE WORLD’S TOP 25 DESIGN SCHOOLS’ BY BUSINESS INSIDER MAGAZINE
The Interaction Design Programme teaches fundamental skills, methods and tools related to tangible/product interactions, graphical/screen interactions and service design/strategic interactions.
CIID provides a new model of education that is relevant for both academia and industry. Through collaborative Industry Partnerships and industry facing projects, students are exposed to a broad range of topics and real-world contexts.
The Summer School provides participants the opportunity to explore interaction design through a series of modular workshops. Reflecting our multi-disciplinary outlook, these workshops are attended by students and professionals from many backgrounds, ages and cultures.
INTERACTION DESIGN PROGRAMME
Following a rigorous selection process, each year CIID selects up to 25 talented people from all over the world to participate in their Masters level Interaction Design Programme (IDP).
Through an intense one-year curriculum, participants are taught to identify opportunities and to create new applications for technology – but more importantly to humanise technology – through the creation of meaningful, pragmatic and socially relevant concepts.
CIID places faith in diversity of skills, thinking and culture – and believes in imparting skills for teamwork, communication and collaboration, not just technical and design skills. Each person brings individual skills with them and the IDP is an effective platform for peer-to-peer learning.
Through the design of software, products and services, CIID applies a hands-on and people-centred approach to interaction design. They believe in early, iterative and rapid prototyping as an integral part of the entire design process.
Looking for insights and inspirations, CIID promotes a design process that is not just about problem solving but about generating solutions that offer genuine value and would have a viable impact. CIID teaches how to apply technology to everyday life by designing for the ‘near future’ – encouraging speculative thinking, that is grounded in reality.
Their mission is to teach participants how to design & implement products, services and environments – in line with CIID’s vision to inspire action towards better futures.
